The Association "Diafa
al Meghreb" was founded by Sued Benkhdim to offer educational, legal,
and welfare support to the Magreb community in Turin. As one of its activities,
Sued Benkhdim and her colleagues set up creative workshops. In these workshops,
street children and disenfranchised homeless adolescents write and draw
to reflect, express themselves, and explore their personal interests.
In fostering a sense of collective responsibility these workshops have
been important in preventing young people from getting caught up in a
deeper involvement in criminal activity as a means of survival and have
encouraged a more positive view of their own future. In order to create
a connection with their home culture, the workshops often employ traditional
techniques such as henna designs on hands and the use of Arabic script.
