'East
Coast Dream' is a super 8 film made whilst sitting on the front seat of
the old wooden rollercoaster (demolished in 2001) in the Vidampark funfair
in 1999. It has been slowed down to one third of the original speed, so
transforming the ride's spectacular high-speed thrill to a dream like
contemplation which allows a view of the elaborate and beautifully cumbersome
wooden structure as well as the surrounding environment. Once the ride
reaches its end, it begins over again in a relentless never ending loop.
The
title refers to the video's dream like quality, its location and similarity
to the 'Coney Island Cyclone' rollercoaster on the East coast of the USA. It
can evoke significane in a range of contexts but when shown in Budapest,
it provides both an image of a journey that many residents of Budapest
will have experienced in childhood or at some point in their lives and
a metaphor for the instability many have experienced in the changes since. |
