In
a small Hungarian town, Paks, I saw an empty billboard by the bus
station. Despite being placed in front of the waiting passengers,
in a prime spot for attracting attention, it had nothing to say. In
contrast to the way that billboards usually function - to provoke
the desire to consume and accumulate more and more - I liked the idea
that, in this case, the billboard appeared to be making the statement
that nothing is what you need: in both a passive and active sense.
But there remains a sense that as it's on a billboard, even that may
be packaged and sold. In order to make that statement more explicit,
I cut out and pasted the letters to spell the Hungarian word "Semmi"
(Nothing).
